“A man can do all things if he will.” – Leon Battista Alberti (1404-1472)
The Case of Dr. Jayant Patel and Medical Malpractice
Dr. Jayant Patel, an Indian-born surgeon, gained notoriety for his involvement in a series of medical malpractice cases in Australia and the United States. He became one of the many physicians dubbed as “Dr. Death” by local hospital staff and media after facing allegations of negligence, incompetence, and unethical behavior, including performing unnecessary surgeries and botching procedures that resulted in patient harm and death.
With so many doctors coming out in the media dubbed for their dispicable medical actions, it’s curious to consider where their ambitions took an ulterior path to the one’s who are devoted to upholding their Hippocratic oath. Just to name a few examples of the now 73 year old rescinded surgeon’s reign of maim; an Aborignal woman had her leg amputated due to diabetes, with the post-surgical wound closure being so neglected that she became semi-comatose and gangrenous six days later. He operated on a cancer patient who was too weak to withstand surgery, and despite objection from colleagues and staff, the surgery was performed and she died on the operating table. There are also countless examples of Patel making purposeful punctures to major organs, causing massive internal bleeding leading to death and disability for a number of his patients turned victims. Perhaps Patel’s will was not to do all the things he can, but all the things he desires – the maiming of innocent patients.
In the context of the case of Dr. Jayant Patel, Leon Battista Alberti’s quote underscores the importance of individual will and intention in shaping one’s actions and outcomes. On one hand, Alberti’s quote carries an empowering message about human agency, but it also serves as a reminder of the ethical responsibilities that accompany one’s actions, especially in the field of medicine. Dr. Patel’s actions highlight the devastating consequences that can arise when medical professionals fail to uphold ethical standards and prioritize patient safety.
This example highlights the complex interplay between individual will and ethical conduct in the context of medical practice, emphasizing the need for healthcare professionals to act with integrity and accountability in fulfilling their duty to patients.
